Titanium and titanium alloy materials are commonly used in the manufacture of medical, surgical, orthopedic implants and medical instruments.

Bone and joint replacement; cardiovascular components; external prosthesis; dental implants; surgical instruments; craniofacial and maxillofacial treatment.

Medical grade titanium is used for preparation:

Pins, bone plates, screws, rods, wires, struts, rib expandable cages, spinal fusion cages, finger and toe bones, and maxillofacial resurfacing.

Ti6Al4V ELI is a preferred grade for medical/dental applications because of highly favourable combination of biocompatibility, excellent corrosion resistance, high strength and low modulus of elasticity. Typical applications are joint replacement (hip, knee, shoulder), bone fixation devices, surgical clips, cryogenic vessels, surgical tools. 
 

Ti6Al4V ELI is an alpha­beta titanium alloy mainly used for medical implant applications. It is an Extra Low Interstitial alloy with a high purity, which confers improved ductility and fracture toughness. Ti­6Al­4V ELI offer greater fracture­resistance when used in dental implants. The implant procedure begins with the insertion of a titanium screw into the jaw. The screw resembles and acts like the root of the tooth. After an allotted amount of time has passed for the bone to have grown into the medical grade titanium screw, a fake tooth is connected to the implant.
 

Most all of us know someone who has required orthopedic surgery to replace a failing hip socket, shoulder joint or severely broken bone. It’s very likely medical grade titanium was the material of choice for surgeons when reconstructing these parts of the body. The natural titanium properties make it a perfect alloy to be used within the body. Some of the most common applications for titanium are in hip and knee replacement surgeries. It is also used to replace shoulder and elbow joints and to protect the vertebrae following complicated and invasive back surgery. Titanium pegs are used to attach false eyes and ears and titanium heart valves are even competing with regular tissue valves.
 

The grade meets the stringent requirements of all applicable standards for implant materials. Titanium has been selected as a metal of choice in the orthopedic segment of the market because it is inert in the human body, it has been proven to be compatible with bone density. Being strong and with a low modulus, hence making it an excellent material of choice in the orthopedic arena. 
 

The human body readily accepts titanium as it has been proven to be more biocompatible than stainless steel or cobalt chrome. In addition, titanium has a higher fatigue strength than many other metals. Compatibility with MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT (Computed Technology) also contribute to the selection of titanium as the material of choice in orthopedic applications.
